Description
Stainless steel is characterized by a chromium content of more than 10.5%, which must be dissolved in the austenitic or ferritic solid solution. This high chromium content causes a protective and dense passive layer of chromium oxide to form on the surface of the material. After special treatment, this passive layer can simultaneously be used to color the steel surface. Other alloying elements such as nickel, molybdenum, manganese and niobium result in even better corrosion resistance or more favorable mechanical properties. Since chromium as an alloying element is less expensive than nickel, a higher chromium content with a smaller nickel content (assuming the same corrosion resistance) is preferred.
