Description
Stainless steel is characterized by a chromium content of more than 10.5%, which must be dissolved in the austenitic or ferritic solid solution. This high chromium content causes a protective and dense passive layer of chromium oxide to form on the surface of the material. After special treatment, this passive layer can simultaneously be used to color the steel surface. Other alloying elements such as nickel, molybdenum, manganese and niobium result in even better corrosion resistance or more favorable mechanical properties. Since chromium as an alloying element is less expensive than nickel, a higher chromium content with a smaller nickel content (assuming the same corrosion resistance) is preferred.


Properties

Stainless steels are mainly characterized by the following common properties:

  •     increased resistance to corrosion and acids
  •     high toughness and therefore poor machinability
  •     poor electrical and thermal conductivity

Steels with higher nickel content (about 70% of production) form austenitic microstructures and have the following properties:

  •     higher corrosion resistance than low-nickel chromium steels (in particular resistance to stress corrosion cracking)
  •     largely non-magnetic in the stress-free condition
  •     comparatively low yield strength (200-300 N/mm²) with relatively high tensile strength (700-1300 N/mm²)
  •     high coefficient of thermal expansion (for example, a value of 16.0 × 10-6 K-1 for material 1.4301 compared with a value of 10.5 × 10-6 K-1 for carbon steel)
  •     Density 1.4301 (V2A): 7.9 g/cm3, 1.4401 (V4A): 8.0 g/cm3 [8].
  •     cannot be hardened by annealing and subsequent quenching
  •     surface hardening only possible by plasma nitriding, colsterizing or cold forming
  •  good for joining by welding
